Breast Reduction Surgery
Having large breasts, as well as causing pain and discomfort, can lead to a lack of confidence. We meet many women who tell us about the distress that is caused by having large breasts, not only because they feel self-conscious, but because they can't participate in sports and have difficulty finding clothes that fit their proportions.
What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery and what sort of problems is it suitable for?
Breast reduction surgery (also known as mammaplasty) is suitable for women who are suffering discomfort or embarrassment because they have large breasts. Breast reduction surgery is also suitable for women who have one breast that is noticeably larger than the other. Because the breasts are uplifted at the time of the reduction, any sagging is also corrected.
What does breast reduction surgery involve?
Incisions are made in the fold under the breasts and excess tissue and skin are removed to decrease breast size. The breasts are then reduced and uplifted, and the nipples repositioned. There are various options for the positioning of the scars and your surgeon will discuss these with you during your consultation.
What sort of anaesthetic is available when having breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep during the operation.
How long does breast reduction surgery take?
The surgery takes 2½ - 3 hours and a one night stay in one of our private hospitals is usually required.
Who will perform the breast reduction surgery?
A fully qualified specialist Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, who is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons or European equivalent. You will have a consultation with the surgeon who will perform your operation in advance of your surgery.
Where will the breast reduction surgery be performed?
In a state-of-the-art private hospital which specialises in cosmetic surgery and is registered with the Care Quality Commission.
What is the recovery time following breast reduction surgery?
The recovery time differs from one person to another, but most people take 2 - 3 weeks off work following breast reduction surgery. Sometimes there is some swelling and discomfort directly after surgery, but this can be managed with painkillers. It is recommended that you wear a good support bra for four to six weeks after the breast surgery and only partake in light duties for a month after the operation.
What aftercare is provided following breast reduction surgery?
An overnight stay is usually required after the operation, during which you will receive the optimum medical care. One week after surgery you will have a check-up with the clinic nurse. You will also have consultations with the surgeon at 2 – 3 weeks, 3 months and as appropriate.
Are there any after-effects or associated risks from breast reduction surgery?
As with most operations, you will experience some post-operative swelling and soreness, but this doesn't usually last long and you should not experience any other side-effects. Breast feeding is not usually possible after a breast reduction because the nipples are repositioned. Sensitivity in the nipples also tends to be reduced. There are small risks associated with all surgery, but we have successfully treated thousands of patients over the years and use fully qualified specialist surgeons, so risks are minimal. We will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have during your consultation.
Can breast reduction surgery be used in conjunction with other treatments?
Breast reduction can sometimes be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures and treatments, such as liposuction. If you are considering other cosmetic procedures, we can provide you with advice during your consultation.
How does the process work?
