At The Alexandra Clinic, we've met lots of people who have suffered from a lack of self-esteem since they were a child because their ears stick out. It's a common problem, yet many people suffer in silence, not realising that a simple ear correction procedure, also known as a Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty, can completely rectify the problem.
What are the benefits of ear correction surgery and what sort of problems is it suitable for?
Men and women of all ages who have protruding ears (sometimes known as 'bat-ears') can benefit from cosmetic ear surgery. The problem tends to be genetically inherited and the only permanent solution is ear correction surgery. Fortunately, it is a relatively straightforward operation, which can usually be performed under local anaesthetic as a day case. Because the incision is made behind the ear, it is usually hardly visible. The result is permanent, satisfying and can dramatically enhance your self-confidence.
What does ear correction surgery involve?
Often, protruding ears lack a normal fold, which is what causes them to stick out rather than lying close to the head. An incision is made at the back of the ear and the surgeon then adjusts the shape of the cartilage within the ear to create the missing folds. After the ear correction operation, a turban style bandage is usually worn to protect the ears.
What sort of anaesthetic is available when having ear correction surgery?
In many cases cosmetic ear surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic with mild sedation, which eliminates the very small but intrinsic risks associated with a general anaesthetic. If preferred, a general anaesthetic can be used.
How long does ear correction surgery take?
The surgery usually only takes about one hour and an overnight stay is not usually necessary.
Who will perform the ear correction surgery?
A fully qualified specialist Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, who is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons or European equivalent. You will have a consultation with the surgeon who will perform the procedure in advance of your surgery.
Where will the ear correction surgery be performed?
In a state-of-the-art private hospital which specialises in cosmetic surgery and is registered with the Care Quality Commission.
What is the recovery time following ear correction surgery?
The recovery time differs from one person to another but most people take 7 – 10 days off work after cosmetic ear surgery. There is usually some soreness for a few weeks after surgery but this can be controlled with Paracetamol or Codeine. The hair can be washed after the dressing and stitches have been removed and it is important to keep the grooves behind the ears clean.
What aftercare is provided after ear correction surgery?
You will have a check-up with the clinic nurse about 5 days after the surgery, at which point the head bandage will be removed. You will also have consultations with the surgeon at 2 – 3 weeks, 3 months and as appropriate.
Are there any after-effects or associated risks from ear correction surgery?
As with most operations, there is usually some soreness and numbness after ear correction surgery, but this does not last long. The scar behind the ear normally settles well, but on very rare occasions it can become red and lumpy and may then require further treatment. It is often recommended that a protective head band is worn when sleeping for a few weeks after surgery to stop the ears being bent forward. There are small risks associated with all surgery, but we have successfully treated thousands of patients over the years and use fully qualified specialist surgeons, so risks are minimal. We will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have during your consultation.
Can ear correction surgery be used in conjunction with other treatments?
Sometimes it is possible to have other cosmetic procedures in conjunction with ear correction surgery. If you are considering other cosmetic procedures, we can provide you with advice during your consultation.
