Suitable for both men and women, liposuction is the fast, safe and effective way to get rid of fat in those stubborn areas that don't respond to dieting and exercise. Since its introduction as a regular surgical procedure in 1982, liposuction has become one of the most commonly performed cosmetic operations, and is the internationally approved and accepted way to safely remove excess body fat in specific areas.

What are the benefits of liposuction surgery and what sort of problems is it suitable for?

If you have ever despaired of an area of your body that never seems to respond to diet or exercise, liposuction could be the solution where all else has failed. Liposuction is used to remove excess pockets of fat and improve the body's contours, rather than acting as a method of weight loss. Men tend to store excess fat around their flanks, abdomen and breasts. For women, fat often accumulates around the buttocks, hips, thighs, knees and lower abdomen. All of these areas can be treated with liposuction surgery. The procedure is particularly effective for younger individuals, who have greater elasticity in the skin.

What does liposuction surgery involve?

A very small metal tube is inserted into the area being treated and the fatty tissue is gently broken down and removed by suction.

What sort of anaesthetic is available when having liposuction surgery?

Liposuction is usually performed under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep during the operation.

How long does liposuction take?

It usually takes 1½ - 3 hours depending on the area being treated and a one night stay in one of our private hospitals is usually required.

Who will perform the liposuction?

A fully qualified specialist Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, who is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons or European equivalent. You will have a consultation with the surgeon who will perform the procedure in advance of your surgery.

Where will the liposuction surgery be performed?

In a state-of-the-art private hospital which specialises in cosmetic surgery and is registered with the Care Quality Commission.

What is the recovery time following liposuction surgery?

The recover time differs from one person to another, but most people take 10 – 14 days off work following liposuction. Sometimes there is some swelling and discomfort after surgery, but this can be managed with painkillers. We would recommend that you only partake in light duties for a month after the operation.

What aftercare is provided following liposuction surgery?

An overnight stay is usually required after the operation, during which you will receive the optimum medical care. 5 – 7 days after surgery you will have a check-up with a nurse. You will also have consultations with the surgeon at 2 – 3 weeks, 3 months and as appropriate.

Are there any after-effects or associated risks from liposuction?

As with most operations, you will experience some post-operative swelling and soreness following liposuction, but this doesn't usually last long and you should not experience any other side-effects. There are small risks associated with all surgery, but we have successfully treated thousands of patients over the years and use fully qualified specialist surgeons, so risks are minimal. We will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have during your consultation.

Can liposuction be used in conjunction with other treatments?

Liposuction is sometimes most effective, particularly for older patients, when performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures and treatments, such as facelifts and tummy tucks. If you are considering other cosmetic procedures, we can provide you with advice during your consultation.

How does the process work?

The first step is to arrange a free consultation at our Chester liposuction clinic with one of our professional, sympathetic and highly trained counsellors. They will assess your requirements, talk to you about the procedure and give you all the liposuction information you need. It is important to us that you feel entirely comfortable with every element of the liposuction treatment, so there will be no pressure to proceed and we will be happy to answer any queries you may have. If you decide you would like to go ahead, you will have a consultation with the surgeon who is going to perform the procedure, in which you can discuss all the elements of the surgery, the desired result and ensure you are completely happy to proceed.
