Sometimes exercise and diet alone aren't enough to give you the toned, flat stomach you want. Women often find, particularly after pregnancy or weight loss, that their stomach stretches and loses its shape, while men are similarly affected by age and weight loss. The tummy tuck (also known as an abdominoplasty) enables you to have the flatter, smoother stomach that you've always dreamed of.
What are the benefits of tummy tuck surgery and what sort of problems is it suitable for?
As well as removing excess fat, this procedure can tighten stomach muscles and get rid of stretch marks from the lower abdomen. Tummy tucks are particularly suitable for women who have completed their family and are finding it impossible to regain their pre-pregnancy tummy, or men and women whose stomach has stretched and sagged following weight loss.
What does tummy tuck surgery involve?
The excess skin and fat are removed from the mid to lower abdomen. The skin is then drawn together, leaving a scar below the bikini line. Any looseness of the muscles can be repaired. Sometimes it is necessary to move the navel, in which case there will be a scar around the navel. Because an area of skin is removed, this often means that stretch marks and any scars from previous abdominal surgery are partly or completely eliminated as well.
What sort of anaesthetic is available when having tummy tuck surgery?
Tummy tucks are usually performed under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep during the operation.
How long does a tummy tuck take?
The surgery takes 2 – 4 hours and at least a one night stay in one of our private hospitals is usually required.
Who will perform the tummy tuck?
A fully qualified specialist Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, who is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons or European equivalent. You will have a consultation with the surgeon who will perform the procedure in advance of your surgery.
Where will the tummy tuck surgery be performed?
In a state-of-the-art private hospital which specialises in cosmetic surgery and is registered with the Care Quality Commission.
What is the recovery time following tummy tuck surgery?
The recovery time differs from one person to another, but most people take 2 – 3 weeks off work. Complete rest will be necessary for 7 – 10 days, followed by light duties only for a further 2 – 3 weeks. Sometimes there is some swelling and discomfort after surgery, but this can be managed with painkillers.
What aftercare is provided following tummy tuck surgery?
An overnight stay is usually required after the tummy tuck surgery, during which you will receive the optimum medical care. You will have a check-up with the clinic nurse 5 – 7 days after the operation. You will also have consultations with the surgeon at 2 – 3 weeks, 3 months and as appropriate.
Are there any after-effects or associated risks from tummy tuck surgery?
As with most operations, there is usually some post operative swelling and soreness after the tummy tuck. Slight swelling above the scar usually occurs due to a collection of tissue fluid, but this usually settles within a few months. Sometimes there is numbness in the lower part of the abdominal wall after surgery but this is usually temporary. There are small risks associated with all surgery, but we have successfully treated thousands of patients over the years and use fully qualified specialist surgeons, so risks are minimal. We will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have during your consultation.
Can a tummy tuck be used in conjunction with other treatments?
Tummy tucks are sometimes particularly effective when performed in conjunction with liposuction. If you are considering other cosmetic procedures, we can provide you with advice during your consultation.
